Mix-Tape Cassette Series Q&A with Lindsey Cox
Factory Obscura is stoked to announce the return of our Mix-Tape Cassette Series with Volume 5 currently in the works! Each year since 2019, Factory Obscura collaborates with local musicians to create a new song inspired by each of “The Feels” in Mix-Tape. Music producer/composer Nikolas Thompson then engineers, mixes, and masters each track that makes up the Mix-Tape. And now Volume 5 is coming!
Each year, to celebrate the new Mix-Tape release, we host Future of Sound Fest featuring all of the performers and the songs they created! Save the date for the next Future of Sound Fest on March 23rd, 2024!
We talked with Factory Obscura’s Event and Booking Manager Lindsey Cox, who created this series almost five years ago and continues to be the heart that makes this collaborative project beat.

Factory Obscura: When did the idea of starting a Mix-Tape Cassette Series come about? Where did the idea stem from?
Lindsey Cox: The idea came about in 2019 as I was just starting to work with Factory Obscura. I wanted to invite artists in the local music scene to collaborate with Factory Obscura to create something completely new and exciting.
When did the first Mix-Tape cassette come out? How many volumes have been released since?
Volume 1 came out in February of 2020 and Factory Obscura has released a total of 4 so far.
What is the intention with the artists you choose to collaborate with on the Mix-Tape Cassette Series?
The intention is to showcase how diverse and unique Oklahoma City’s local music scene is. We have such a variety of genres and performers. There is something for everyone.
What are the songs on Mix-Tapes inspired by?
Each song is inspired by one of the six emotions evoked by each of the six rooms in Factory Obscura’s Mix-Tape immersive art experience. Those emotions are: Joy, Angst, Love, Melancholy, Hope, and Wonder.
What can people expect when listening to a Mix-Tape “Mix-Tape?” Is it all music?
You can expect a variety of genres from song to song. In previous volumes, we invited poets to interpret each of the six emotions. We are always looking for new ways to expand and evolve the project.
Mix-Tape Vol. 5 is about to come out! What artists are featured in this volume?
Yesss! Volume 5 will feature:
Joy: Electronic producer and composer, Sweetest Pot
Angst: Pop/Emo-Punk Rock band, Psychic Baths
Love: Experimental singer/songwriter/harpist, Moriah Bailey
Melancholy: Alt-Americana band, Baileyboy
Hope: Indie/Folk singer/songwriter, Challo
Wonder: Soul/Pop musician, Cheyanne Marie
Can you tell us about Future of Sound Festival? Does that happen yearly, and how does the cassette series play into that?
Future of Sound Fest is Factory Obscura’s annual music festival celebrating the release of the Mix-Tape collaborative cassette as well as the return of Spring! The festival features the musicians featured on the cassette.
Where can people purchase past volumes and the newest one, Mix-Tape Vol. 5?
You can purchase Volume 3 and 4 at The Mix-Tape Bonus Track shop! These cassette releases are very limited, so be sure to collect them all before they sell out!
